First and foremost, I am really very sorry for taking forever to post this story. I completely totally missed this in my draft. Oopsie!
Let's begin, shall we?
I had my first Yee Sang of my life 3weeks ago. I went to the restaurant in the Mines Resort & Golf Club with people I work closely with at work. I told them that it was my first Yee Sang ever and because of that, my boss questioned my Malaysian-ness. Who never tried Yee Sang before, raise your hand! (You, you who's reading this, you better raise your hand.)
See I'm not alone. There are people who don't even know what Yee Sang is. They've never heard of it. Seriously guys, lose your citizenship now. Hehehehe.
Alright, alright don't worry about it, I'll tell you what it is.
Yee Sang is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor. The Chinese community celebrates this with a plate of salad put together with other ingredients. It usually consists of strips of raw fish, mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments, among other ingredients. How they eat? All of them will mix the ingredient together with a chopstick while screaming ‘lou hei†(well wishes). They believe that the higher they raise it, the more wealth and joy is approaching their lives.
That's right, I know stuff. Not questioning my Malaysian-ness now, are you.
.
.
Ok, I may have googled that information.

Anyway, this is all pretty new to me too. So, while my friend was pointing one by one to me and go "this is shredded mango, this is shredded carrots, cucumbers, carrots, turnip, radish, crispy crackers, pomelo bits, dyed dried vermicelli......"
All I see was vege, vege, vege and all I hear in my head was "shredded something, white thingy, green thingy, keropok, dyed what? I'd die!! "
You know how much I hate vege. I thought to myself, I cannot eat this! This is not food. How do I get out of this. Should I excuse myself to the bathroom for 1hour or should I fake-faint?
So when my boss said ... "Alright, shall we ..."
Oh no.
My friends know this about me and of course, they were all already laughing at my face. Such lovely friends I have.
So we all use the chopstick and start tossing it up in the air and everyone was screaming something I couldn't tell at all. It was supposed to sound like LOU-AHHH but I swear I heard one of us said, BIG APRIL BONUSSS! Hahahahahaha. When we're done with the tossing, guys I'm telling you, only half left on the plate. The other half was everywhere on the table. I was quite happy actually because I can excuse myself from eating them. Be that bigger person that lets everyone else eat. Or so I thought.
"Azrah, here. Let me put on your plate. You should try."
Of course. My lovely friends wouldn't let me get away with this.
I tried it, people. I really did. It was not so bad actually.
.
.
How not so bad, you ask? Oh, it was okay. I'm proud of myself.
.
.
Sorry, I can't do it. Can't lie.
I DON'T LIKE IT.
I'm so sorry, I tried but my throat wouldn't accept it *cries* Also, that, what I just ate, ladies and gentlemen, was the worst I've ever had. No offense to those who likes Yee Sang but honest to God, I can't swallow anymore of this. Oh god, writing this reminds me of that strange chalky taste down my throat. I think I just consumed something that messes my body chemistry.
I had to drink Pepsi to get rid of the taste. Fyi, I don't take soft drinks too, so you can imagine how desperate I was at that time. Just in time when I was about to question my fate with God, something familiar came to the table.
Oh God, thank you so much. I knew You were just testing me. I knew You would be fair. Thank you for fried chicken and shrimp. I love You, God.
Didn't manage to get the before picture. Too excited to see the chicken and shrimp. Guess who finished up the last pieces? You know it. Hehe! I had vege earlier, I must balance it out!
Next year's Yee Sang session, I have a feeling I'm gonna get stuck in traffic and only reach the restaurant after 1 hour. Probably around the time the chicken and shrimp being served on the table. I apologies in advance, guys.
